Abstract >>
Technological advances together with the continuous description of new taxa have led to frequent reclassifications in bacterial taxonomy. In this study, an extensive bibliographic revision, as well as a sequence analysis of nine housekeeping genes (cpn60, dnaJ, dnaX, gyrA, gyrB, mdh, recA, rpoB and rpoD) and a phenotypic identification of Aeromonas hydrophila subspecies anaerogenes were performed. All data obtained from previous physiological, phylogenetic, and DNA-DNA hybridization studies together with those presented in this study suggested that A. hydrophila subspecies anaerogenes belonged to the species Aeromonas caviae rather than A. hydrophila. Therefore, the inclusion of A. hydrophila subsp. anaerogenes in the species A. caviae is proposed.

A. punctata, A. caviae, and A. punctata subsp. caviae are homotypic synonyms by the rules of the Bacteriological Code. However, this stems from the incorrect designation of the type strain for A. punctata as ATCC 15468 in Skerman et al. (1980). The correct strain is NCMB 74 (= ATCC 23309) (Martin-Carnahan and Joseph 2005b). However, this is the same type strain as Aeromonas eucrenophila. The Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Vibrionaceae (1989, 1992, 1998, 1999) has considered that a request should be made to the Judicial Commission to correct the type strain of Aeromonas punctata. However, no request for an opinion has been published. Until the matter is resolved, A. caviae and A. punctata are considered homotypic synonyms with the former given priority in the NCBI Taxonomy Database due to its more common usage in the scientific literature.

Aeromonas eucrenophila species nova Aeromonas caviae a later and illegitimate synonym of Aeromonas punctata.
Zentralblatt fur Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie, und Hygiene. Series A, Medical microbiology, infectious diseases, virology, parasitology 268 (1)
PMID : 3394446
Abstract >>
Aeromonas caviae is a later and illegitimate synonym of Aeromonas punctata. In order to secure continuity in literature, it is proposed to use the trivial term "caviae type" in connection with the species name A. punctata temporarily especially for strains isolated in connection to diarrhoea in children. Aeromonas eucrenophila sp. nov. is described, type strain in NCMB 74. The new aerogenic psychrotrophic Aeromonas species is separated genotypically from Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas punctata (caviae type).

A taxonomic study of the Aeromonas hydrophila-Aeromonas punctata group.

Abstract >>
A total of 203 characters has been determined for 68 strains of Aeromonas belonging to the Aeromonas hydrophila-A. punctata group. The results have been subjected to computer analysis using the coefficient of Jaccard-Sneath and the strains clustered by the method of aggregation according to the variance. The 68 strains can be divided into two well-segregated classes on the basis of 59 variable characters, of which seven are of diagnostic value. The two classes are considered as two separate species. The first one (42 strains) is assigned to the type species of the genus, A. hydrophila, and it appears that the species name, A. punctata, is an illegitimate synonym for A. hydrophila. The second (26 strains) constitutes a new species for which the name A. sobria sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of this new species has been deposited under the reference CIP7433 (our strain 208).
